Early Commercial Strategy Director focus BD

As the Early Commercial Strategy Director, you will be a core member of multiple early- and/or late stage Vaccine Development Teams (VDTs) for GSK’s Vaccine pipeline and lead the Early Commercial Strategy activities within those assigned assets. The purpose of this role is to lead the Commercial and Global Marketing Strategy work, that contributes to the generation of the optimized Target Vaccine Profiles and vaccine forecast valuations required to secure GSK’s confidence and enthusiasm to invest in continuing vaccine development, via competitive Development, Research and Investment Board governances.

You will be accountable for leading the generation of commercial deliverables for the Integrated Asset Plan (IAP) necessary to support successful transition of projects from VIB into the remit of the PIB and accelerate delivery of the best-on-market claims and labels expected for our Vaccines.

Along with the Discovery Project Leader (DPL) and the Vaccine Development Leader (VDL), as the Early Commercial Strategy Director you are jointly responsible for leading the governance and investment activities necessary to secure milestone-driven development funding from the Investment Board (e.g. optimization, alignment and approval of the investment thesis and funding request and transition criteria). Your work will influence the level of ambition for each candidate, and the prioritization and stage-gate decisions within the Vaccines portfolio.

Critical to the success of this role is an ability to demonstrate the value of strong commercial partnership with the R&D organization, whilst championing the need for patient, health care professional, recommending body and payer focus during early development.

  • Contribute to strategic discussions about each asset and take responsibility for commercial tasks assigned to you.
  • Make the analyses and identify the relevant customer insights to generate hypotheses.
  • Estimate and validate the commercial assumptions to estimate the value of each scenario.
  • Interact extensively with the respective R&D Project Teams and with US commercial and medical organizations, and regional leads for Europe, Emerging Markets and Greater China & Intercontinental.
  • Apply your knowledge of customers to define credible, ambitious scenarios for our candidate vaccines to meet future customer needs.
  • Support your recommendations with appropriate competitive intelligence, customer insights, secondary data, market analogues or market research, showing creativity to build confidence and ambition for our assets, judgement to determine the level of validation needed, and maturity to manage your own time and budget to optimal effect.
  • Jointly responsible with DPL and VDL for generation and approval of competitive Vaccine Profiles (VxPs) by the Development Board and securing milestone driven funding by the Investment Board (for appropriate projects) to deliver the IAP.
  • Responsible for generation of the valuation, investment thesis and business case, review and approval process via the early Forecast Review Committee and Forecast Review Committee (eFRC/FRC).
  • Responsible for challenging the DPT/VDT team to ensure that ambiguity and risk-gating are jointly exploited to create value in the investment thesis for Investment Board.
  • In your role, you will:

  • be involved in a wide range of vaccines, across diseases, technology platforms and life cycle, from discovery to life cycle management
  • focus on assets identified as key business development opportunities or under collaboration agreements, and be the key commercial partner for our business development strategy
  • report to directly to: Vice-President, Head of Commercial Strategy, Global Vaccines.

    Basic Qualifications:

    We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Significant years of relevant industry experience spanning Brand Leadership - Marketing/Sales and/or BD&L roles in biotech/pharma
  • Strong evidence of successful project management experience and/or fundraising experience (e.g. successful new product strategy development, biotech BD&L,).
  • Drive for performance, and able to act independently, creative thinking, problem solver, ability to work under pressure & meet deadlines
  • Experienced in internal and external stakeholder management and operating within a matrix environment, with proven ability to assess situations from different perspective (functional, regional, cultural, etc.) and intelligent integration of past experience with future possibilities
  • Experience of working with primary and secondary sources to develop hypotheses and validate assumptions
  • Experience of executing market-size and market-share strategies
  • High capacity to assimilate, analyze and distil information, to make educated choices and to communicate implications in a way that senior and varied stakeholders adopt the recommendation and use it to guide project prioritization and resource allocation.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

    If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Diverse Life-science commercial background
  • Postgraduate degrees in medicine and/or science and business, and/or strategy,
  • Brand Leadership Marketing/Sales
  • Management experience leading commercial function(s) within the US and/or key LOC markets
  • Field Experience, e.g. Sales, Market Access, MSL, etc.
  • Curiosity and critical thinking to identify a large set of possibilities and lead the analysis and distillation to a strategy that will be effective in a large pharma organization.
  • Experience of working successfully in a global commercial function and successfully developing collaborative ways of working, networking effectively and building strong relationships across different countries, cultures and functions
  • An optimistic team player with the ability to work within and lead a matrix team
  • A curious individual and a creative thinker always looking for opportunities, never overlooking risks and challenges.
