This role sits in our York or Colchester office which provides a premier claims service within the Specialty Claims department of Hiscox UK. The Specialty Claims team handles media, technology, cyber and entertainment claims for some of the world’s leading companies.

We have an excellent track record of professional claims management and are recognised as a market leader in this area.

The role

You will be based in the UK in the Specialty Claims team and will play an active role managing your own claims as well as working closely with the UK Specialty Claims Manager on both claim and non-claim related matters. Typical claims you will be handling include breach of contract, negligence, defamation, data protection, privacy and IP infringement.

You will have regular and direct contact with clients, including some of the world’s leading businesses in this sector. You will manage and negotiate claims, some of which will be high value and high profile, arising from accounts that are 100% underwritten by Hiscox. This is a “hands on role” where you will not only have plenty of client contact; but you will also be liaising regularly with underwriters and pitching for new accounts and attending renewal meetings. This position may involve overseas travel for short periods of time.

What you’ll be doing as a Specialty Claims Underwriter

  • Investigation and management of claims from first notification to conclusion, including recovery actions.
  • Liaising and negotiating by telephone and “face to face” with clients, brokers, claimants and their representatives, including attending mediations and court hearings. While many of our clients may be based in the UK, their businesses are international and a claim can arise from any territory
  • Instructing and actively managing experts including lawyers, barristers, loss adjusters and third party experts.
  • Developing strong commercial relationships with clients and brokers alike.
  • Proactively managing a large claims portfolio.
  • Managing and taking referrals from delegated authority schemes involving lower value claims.
  • Working closely with underwriters to win and retain business and to develop Hiscox’s insurance products.
  • Attending and participating in monthly key claims and quarterly reserving meetings.
  • Our must haves

  • A solicitor with a minimum 2:1 degree who is 0 – 5 years PQE
  • Solid litigation experience, ideally in the technology and/or media sectors..
  • Experience in attending mediations and court hearings
  • Demonstrable track record in dealing with complex disputes and a natural confidence and comfort in dealing with both clients and opponents face to face
  • Ability to find creative solutions to complex problems
