An opportunity has arisen for you to take on the role of Project Chief Engineer within the Infrared Detector business of Leonardo. You will be a recognised domain expert, who engages with project teams, engineers, and customers to help define & realise appropriate technical solutions. The role gives you the opportunity to work with the technology & people at Leonardo’s world class Infrared Detector centre of excellence in Southampton, United Kingdom. Leonardo’s infrared detector products are utilised in a range of applications including military, commercial, space, and astronomy. This range of varied customer applications brings a rewarding variety to the role, as does the technology, which includes cooled infrared focal plane arrays, photoconductor detectors & uncooled pyroelectric devices. You will be the technical signatory for the portfolio of infrared detector products & technologies. As such, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance for product design, safety and integrity. This role provides technical oversight, governance & support to a team of highly skilled design engineers and product design authorities.   • What you will do

    The key responsibilities of the role are as follows:

  • Support the generation of technical concepts and designs by ensuring compliant solutions are provided to internal and external customers
  • Ensure the required product design reviews are held and that the inputs into the reviews are of sufficient technical quality.
  • Proactive support of the design team to ensure compliance with the Leonardo design review and product release process.
  • Ensure that the integrity of design is upheld as the technical signatory for the products within the business area
  • Be the technical signatory for the portfolio of infrared detector products and technologies
  • Track and report on technical issues and provide technical leadership and support to facilitate their resolution.
  • Encourage a mind-set of continuous improvement for the team and products to ensure we grow and learn
  • Engage with stakeholders to help shape future technology and product development roadmaps
  • What we are looking for

    The following skills and experience are required for the role:

  • Educated to a degree level in a physics/engineering-related subject (essential)
  • Previous experience of technical leadership of multi-disciplined engineering teams through product design and development (essential)
  • Strong understanding and proven track record of engineering lifecycles and processes relating to product development (essential)
  • A strong understanding and experience in the domain of electro-optics and/or infrared technology (essential)
  • Experience of design for compliance to legislation requirements/directives/regulations such as RoHS, REACH, and Electrical Equipment Safety Regulations (desirable)
  • Experience of applying systems-thinking to the design process (desirable)
  • Experience of working within the defence industry (desirable)
